North Carolina is frequently affected by hurricanes that develop in the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 through November 30, with the greatest risk occurring in August and September.
Even when a hurricane does not make landfall near Durham or Chapel Hill, the region may experience strong winds and damaging gusts capable of downing trees, damaging property, and causing power and water outages. In addition, hurricanes and associated thunderstorms can produce heavy rainfall that leads to localized flooding.
